Telegram ties every account to a phone number by design, and shows that number to contacts unless you change your privacy settings. A separate verification number keeps your real one off it entirely.

Unlike Discord or WhatsApp, Telegram accounts are identified by phone number at the protocol level - it's how the app finds your contacts and how you log back in on a new device. That number can leak to other users: by default, anyone who has it saved in their contacts can see you're on Telegram, and some privacy settings still reveal it directly. Using a dedicated number for the account sidesteps that entirely.
Telegram accepts real carrier numbers and rejects most VoIP ranges outright during signup. A real, non-VoIP US number registers and re-verifies without issue. See VoIP vs non-VoIP numbers for why that distinction matters here specifically.
Telegram sometimes asks for re-verification later - a new device, a long period of inactivity, or a security check. If you need the same number to stay reachable for that, a number rental keeps it active for days or months, instead of a one-time number that's only good for the initial signup.
