Telegram Login Code Not Arriving: Where It Went

Telegram often sends the login code to another device or calls instead of texting. Find where it went, what a call means, and when the number is at fault.

Telegram usually does not send the login code by SMS first. If you are already signed in on another device, the code goes there, as a message from the "Telegram" service chat. The text message is the fallback. So when a code "never arrives", the first question is not your signal. It is where Telegram sent it.

Updated November 2026. Telegram changes how it delivers codes from time to time, so trust the in-app screen over any guide, including this one.

Look in the three places Telegram uses

Check these in order. It takes a minute.

  1. Any other device where you are signed in: an old phone, a tablet, Telegram Desktop or Telegram Web. Open the chat named Telegram. The code, or a "was this you?" prompt, is often sitting there.
  2. The login screen on this device. If it shows a countdown ("Sending SMS in 1:30"), the text is being held back on purpose. Wait it out. Tapping resend does not speed it up and can lengthen the wait.
  3. The text messages on your phone, including filtered or "unknown sender" folders. Some carriers hold short-code texts.

Clean up old sessions

If you find the code on a forgotten device, log in and open Settings, then Devices (older versions call it Active Sessions). End any session you do not recognise, and turn on two-step verification so a code alone cannot sign someone in.

Here is a made-up example (hypothetical, to show how this goes). Say you request a code on a new phone at 9:14 and nothing arrives. You ask again at 9:25 and 9:40, and Telegram shows a waiting timer. Settings, then Devices, on your laptop lists a phone you sold last year and Telegram Desktop on a work computer. All three codes were sent to those sessions, and no text was ever sent. Nothing was wrong with the number.

If Telegram calls you instead

A phone call with a spoken code is a normal fallback, not a sign your account is in trouble. A call travels over the voice network, so it avoids the filtering some carriers apply to texts. It tends to appear after text delivery has failed or after several requests in a row. Telegram does not publish exactly when it switches, and it varies by number and country.

  • Answer unknown numbers while you are waiting. Letting the call ring out can mean declining your own code.
  • The code expires. Type it in straight away.
  • The call needs a line that accepts incoming calls. If you are using one of our numbers, voice verification answers the call for you and shows the code on your order page.

If nothing arrives anywhere

Then the number is the likely cause. Telegram can refuse or quietly drop codes to some numbers:

Using a US number from us

If you want to keep your own number off a Telegram account, for example one for a project or a test, you can buy a one-time number on the Telegram service page, enter it on the login screen and read the code on your order page. Our numbers are real US mobile lines, not VoIP, and SMS verifications start at $0.50 (pricing).

What to look for in any service of this kind, including ours:

  • The number is a real carrier line, not VoIP.
  • The code appears on a page you can open, not by email later.
  • A full refund if the code never arrives.
  • A clear price before you pay.

We cannot promise Telegram accepts any specific number, and neither can anyone else. If the code does not arrive, you get a full refund.

When not to use a temporary number for Telegram

Telegram ties your account to the phone number. That matters if the number is not yours for the long run:

  • A one-time number is gone in minutes. If you log out and need a new code later, it cannot arrive there.
  • A rental ends. Rentals run from one day to one year (rentals), and then the number returns to the pool and can be given to someone else.
  • You can lock yourself out. Without access to the number, getting back into the account can be slow or impossible.

If you use a short-lived number anyway, set up two-step verification with a recovery email first, and keep a note of which sessions are signed in. For a Telegram account you want to keep for years, use your own number. Our guide to verifying Telegram without your own number covers the options.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Telegram call me instead of sending a text?

Because the text was not getting through, or you asked several times. The call reads the same code. Answer it and type the code in.

Why does the app say the code went to another device?

You are signed in somewhere else, so Telegram used the in-app route. Open the "Telegram" chat on that device.

Can I make Telegram send an SMS?

Not on demand. If a session is signed in elsewhere, the code goes there first. Ending old sessions can leave SMS as the only route.

Will a US number from you work for Telegram?

Often, but we cannot guarantee it. If no code arrives, you get a full refund.

What if I cannot get in at all?

Use Telegram's own account recovery, which may include an email code if you set one up, and see Telegram's help pages for the current steps.
