How to Do a Telegram Change Number and Keep Chats (Step by Step)
Telegram change number keep chats: use Telegram's built-in Change Number feature to move your account to a new number without losing messages, groups, or

To do a Telegram change number keep chats intact, use Telegram's built-in Change Number feature — don't create a new account on the new number. In the mobile app go to Settings → Edit Profile (or Settings → Phone Number, depending on version) → Change Number, enter the new number, and confirm the code Telegram sends to it. Your chats, media, groups, contacts and two-step password stay attached to the account, because the account moves with the number rather than being rebuilt. The rest of this page covers the exact steps, the limits on what moves, and what to do if the new number is temporary.
What Change Number actually does
Telegram accounts are identified by a phone number, but the account itself lives on Telegram's servers, not on your SIM card. Change Number tells Telegram "this account now belongs to a different number." Everything the account owns travels with it: your message history on the cloud, your joined groups and channels, your contacts list, your profile photo, your folders, and your two-step verification password.
Two other paths exist, and both are bad for this goal. Signing up fresh on the new number gives you an empty account and leaves the old one stranded. Deleting and reinstalling changes nothing about which number owns the account. If all you need is a new number to receive the confirmation code, that is a separate problem — see the full walkthrough of Telegram and WhatsApp verification if the code itself is where you're stuck.

Step-by-step: moving your Telegram account to a new number
- Have the new number ready and able to receive SMS. Telegram sends a confirmation code to that number. If the number is a physical SIM, make sure the SIM is in a phone you can reach.
- Open Settings → Edit Profile → Change Number on mobile. On some versions it sits under Settings → Phone Number. The option is mobile-only; it is not available on the desktop or web client.
- Enter the new number in full international format, including the country code.
- Choose what happens to your old number's contacts. Telegram offers to keep the old number as a "previous number" that people can still use to find you, or to move contacts from it. This is optional and reversible later.
- Enter the code sent to the new number, plus your two-step verification password if you set one.
- Verify from another device if prompted. Telegram may ask you to confirm the change from a logged-in session — this is a safety check against someone hijacking your account.
After confirmation, friends who had the old number saved will typically see a notice that your number changed, and the account keeps working on all your logged-in devices. Old chat history stays readable by you; people messaging the old number may land on a different person's account if that number is reassigned, which is why Telegram surfaces the change to your contacts.

What moves, what doesn't, and where it bites
Most things move. A few do not, and they're worth knowing before you commit.
- Cloud chats, groups, channels, media, folders: these move, since they're tied to the account on Telegram's side.
- Your username: stays the same, which is the most reliable way for people to find you after the switch.
- Secret Chats: these are tied to a specific device and a specific chat session. They do not transfer to a new account setup in the same way ordinary chats do, and historically they are the fragile part of any account change. Treat any active Secret Chat as at risk.
- Bots and sessions: logged-in devices stay logged in in most cases. If Telegram signs you out for security, you can log back in with the new number plus your two-step password.
- SMS-based two-factor and recovery: once you change numbers, the old number no longer receives your login codes. Make sure you have a recovery email set.
One caveat that trips people up: if the new number belongs to someone else later, or if you give up the number without changing Telegram first, whoever gets that number next may be able to log into your account. Changing the number in Telegram before you lose control of the old one is the safe order of operations.

Example: moving an account from a prepaid SIM to a rented US number
Say you're travelling and your prepaid SIM expires at the end of the month. You have 14 group chats, a two-step password, and no recovery email set. Here's a working sequence:
- Two days before the SIM expires, open Settings → Edit Profile → Change Number and enter the new US number.
- Telegram sends a code to that number. You read it and enter it, plus your two-step password.
- You tap "Yes, keep it" when asked whether to keep the old number visible as a previous number — this helps a few contacts who still have the old number find you.
- You go to Settings → Privacy and Security and confirm a recovery email is set, so a future code problem doesn't lock you out.
- You log out of the two devices you no longer use.
Total elapsed time is usually a few minutes, and the slow part is receiving the code, not the migration. If you let the old SIM expire before step 1, you lose the ability to confirm the change from the old session, and recovery is harder — Telegram can't help much if you can no longer prove ownership of either number.
Why the code step is where people get stuck
The single biggest failure point in this process is the confirmation code, especially when the new number is short-term. Codes can arrive late, go to a different device, or fail because the number was previously used on another Telegram account. Telegram doesn't allow the same number on two accounts at once, so a recycled number may still be attached to someone else's account until it's released.
This is where a prepaid SMS service can genuinely help: you rent a real US number for as long as you need it, receive the one-time code, and complete the change. ZapSMS rents US numbers for anything from a day up to a year, which matters here because Telegram accounts can need a code again later — for a new device login, for example. Longer rentals are the safer choice if the number is going to be your account's permanent identifier.
If your code is landing on the wrong device rather than not arriving, that's usually a separate issue; the fix is covered in Telegram code wrong device.
How ZapSMS helps with a Telegram number change
ZapSMS is a prepaid storefront for US numbers, with no subscription. For a Telegram change number, the workflow looks like this:
- Pick the number type. One-time verification numbers are for a single code; rentals keep the same number working for a day up to a year. For Telegram specifically, a rental is usually the better fit, because that number becomes your account's login identity.
- Pay per use, no plan. Pricing is listed per service — one-time SMS verification starts at $0.50, voice from $3.50, and rentals are priced by duration. You're not signing up for a recurring bill.
- Receive the Telegram code on the ZapSMS number and enter it in the Change Number screen.
- Keep the rental active for as long as you need to log in again. If the rental lapses, you may not get that number back, so match the duration to how long you plan to use the account.
- Repeat for other accounts. The same approach works for other services — SMS verification services covers real non-VoIP US numbers for one-time codes, and the FAQ answers the common questions about what happens after a rental ends.
A word of realism: whether a rented number works for Telegram depends on the number and on Telegram's own checks at the time, and Telegram can restrict accounts on numbers it considers suspicious. Use it for legitimate account migration, and keep your two-step password and recovery email set regardless.
After the change: three things to check
Confirm the new number is the one shown in Settings → Edit Profile. Check that your two-step verification password is still active and that a recovery email is saved. Then ask one contact to message you on the new number and confirm it reaches the right account. If any of those fail, don't delete anything — log in on another device and recheck before making further changes.
If you're still deciding whether to change numbers at all, or you're setting up a Telegram account for the first time and want the code process explained end to end, the WhatsApp and Telegram verification guide covers the common verification problems and how each service handles codes.

Frequently asked questions
Does changing my Telegram number delete my chats?
No. Telegram chats, groups, channels and media live in your cloud account, so Change Number moves the account to the new number with history intact. The exception is Secret Chats, which are device-bound and can't be relied on after a change.
Can I keep my old number visible after changing it?
Yes. Telegram offers an option to keep the previous number so contacts who still have it saved can find you. You can reverse that choice later in Settings → Edit Profile.
Why won't Telegram send the code to my new number?
The number may already be linked to another Telegram account, the format may be missing the country code, or the SMS may be delayed. If the number is temporary, renting one for longer is often more reliable than a free throwaway.
Can I use a rented US number for Telegram?
Sometimes, and it depends on the number and Telegram's checks at the time. ZapSMS offers US number rentals from a day up to a year, and a longer rental is safer because the number becomes your account's login identity.
What happens if I lose the new number later?
You may be unable to log in if Telegram asks for a code to that number, and whoever receives the recycled number could potentially reach the account. Set a recovery email and two-step password so you have a fallback.
